How to Keep Your Facebook Account Secure?
Facebook recently reported that access tokens to nearly 150 million accounts had been stolen from the site. Since then, there’s been no indication that the stolen data has been leaked, but users are still uneasy about this massive breach. In addition to personal information, Facebook access tokens could allow hackers access to any of thousands of sites and services that rely on Facebook logins, which range from streaming services to eCommerce platforms that hold sensitive financial information.
In light of this most recent attack, there’s plenty of reason to be worried about your personal information falling into the wrong hands. So, what are some ways that you can secure your Facebook account and ensure that your data remains your own?
Password Security
Although no passwords were stolen in this attack, but rather access tokens which keep you logged in to the site, there’s no reason not to keep your password secure and to change it often. You can also use a password manager to keep your passwords synced across all of your devices. The best password management software will keep your passwords encrypted.
Facebook Settings
You can change the sites and services that use your Facebook login information if you’re worried that they’ve been compromised. Go to the security and login tab on the settings menu of Facebook to see the list and to remove any that are outdated or that could be a source of sensitive information. Having done this, you can go directly to those sites and sign in with a traditional username and password combination that’s unique to that site.
Be Wary of Phishing Attempts
As of now, there is no information on what’s being done with the stolen data, but phishing scams are a likely source of trouble going forward. Be wary of any “friends” calling out of the blue asking for money.
Now you have a few tools to keep your account secure. Stay safe in this brave new world!
